Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is the undisputed champion in the treatment of Class 2 and 3 obesity (BMI of 35+). Over the past decade, the science behind modern bariatric surgeries and their expected outcomes has improved dramatically. We are happy to discuss your options and help you chart your best path; whether it is to have surgery within our program or a publicly funded program in Alberta. For many patients, surgery is the best path to better health, but it should never be considered as a stand-alone solution—an integrated multidisciplinary program with pre-operative optimization and long-term follow up is key.

Medical Weight Management

Our intensive medical weight management program combines the most effective strategies available for non-surgical weight loss. Unlike many commercial diet plans, every aspect of our program is evidence-based. Your team includes an obesity medicine physician, nurse practitioner, psychologist, and registered dietitian. Your program may also include prescription medication in accordance with the best available evidence for multi-pronged interventions. A consultation will establish whether this program is the most beneficial approach for you.

Vital Bariatrics is a multidisciplinary team of dedicated medical professionals, each specializing in the treatment of obesity.

We joined forces to solve a problem we saw every day: thousands of Albertans urgently need help with managing their weight, but most do not receive timely and thorough care via the public health system or medical tourism.

We’re pleased to offer two options for privately-paid care: bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass) and a six-month medical weight management program. Through our combined skillsets and careful, evidence-based planning, our programs are designed to support both your mental and physical health and guide you towards sustainable positive change. Both programs include continuous collaboration with a physician, nurse practitioner, psychologist, and registered dietitian. Our surgical program includes nine months of dedicated follow-up care, after which we continue to be available for support.

One of the key issues surrounding bariatric surgery via the public health system is timeliness of care. A typical wait time is 3-5 years from referral to surgery, and with COVID-related backlogs, this wait is only getting lengthier. We are here to provide you with the care you need in months, not years.

Sometimes, Albertans opt to travel internationally on their own in an effort to access surgery sooner. Unfortunately, this often results in poor or non-existent follow-up care, abandoned and underinformed patients, and medical complications. Our goal is to help you avoid these pitfalls and ensure you receive the care you deserve, with a Canadian team that stays with you and supports you throughout your journey.

  • Costs are of course an important consideration for all patients. When comparing programs, it is important to consider the quality of the care and outcomes you are receiving. The least expensive program is rarely the most beneficial. We have done our utmost to make our program accessible while refusing to compromise safety or quality at any point along the way.

The cost of our six-month medical weight management program is $1,895. Your schedule will include weekly consultations with rotating members of our multidisciplinary team for the first three months, followed by biweekly sessions for the last three months. The cost of our twelve-month bariatric surgery program ranges from $17,000 to $19,000 depending on the surgical procedure that is best for you.

    First Instalment – $2,500

Includes the costs of your initial assessment and three-month pre-operative program with our nurse practitioner, weight loss physician, registered dietitian, and psychologist.

Surgical Fee for Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy – $17,000

Includes the costs of the surgical facility, 2 night stay, nursing, anesthesiology, staplers, medications, laparoscopic equipment, surgeon time, and the complete nine-month post-operative program.

Surgical Fee for Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass – $19,000

Includes the costs of the surgical facility, 2 night stay, nursing, anesthesiology, staplers, medications, laparoscopic equipment, surgeon time, and the complete nine-month post-operative program.

  • Our sights are aimed as high as possible when it comes to your safety, optimal outcomes, and continuity of care. However, we are still committed to making this service as accessible as possible for Albertans. To help our patients manage the financial burden, we offer the option to finance the costs of the program through Medicard, with monthly installments over a period of up to six years.

Patients with extended health benefits may be eligible to have some or all of their program costs covered depending on their insurer.

  • You’re a good candidate for either our surgical or medical weight management programs if you are:

    - Motivated, educated, and ready (we can help with this part)

    - Willing and able to participate in your own health

    - Have no unmanaged mental health diagnoses

    - Have no active eating disorders

Additionally, you’re likely to be a good candidate for surgery if you meet the following parameters:

    - Age 18-55

    - Non-smoker

    - BMI of 35-48

    - For sleeve patients, minimal or no acid reflux (this is not a concern for bypass patients)

    - No severe illnesses that would compromise the safety of the surgery

  • For bariatric surgery, a good candidate will typically be booked for surgery within three months of their initial consultation, following completion of our pre-operative program. This gives our team enough time to get to know you personally, evaluate you thoroughly, prepare you for life after surgery, and set you up for lifelong success.

For medical weight management, interested patients can typically enter the program within a few days or weeks.
