Bariatric Surgery.

Bariatric surgery refers to a surgery that is designed to treat excess weight and weight related medical issues. The outcome of all bariatric surgeries includes weight loss, however, a good surgery must also offer patients improvements in quality of life, life span, and other weight related illnesses. A number of excellent surgical options exist for patients to consider. The gastric sleeve and bypass are chief among these but new procedures are always emerging. If you are contemplating surgery it is extremely important to have a personalized discussion with an expert about your options and your goals.

We do offer private pathways to bariatric surgery for Albertans. For a variety of reasons, many Albertans do not find public bariatric programs to suit their needs. As a result, many Albertans have travelled abroad for surgery only to find themselves orphaned when they return. We have found that surgeries conducted abroad are often lacking in quality, proper informed consent, and appropriate follow up. Frequently, the wrong operation is offered to patients. We aim to make a private option available in Canada to avoid the medical tourism disasters we are often asked to manage after the fact.

Our surgical program is about uncompromising excellence and integrity. We aim to be your most reliable source of information to help you find the best solution to your problem.

Comprehensive Consultations.

Working with bariatric surgery patients has taught us that Albertans struggle to find reliable, unbiased information that is specific to an individual. Bariatric patients frequently present with misunderstandings regarding their own disease and a limited exposure to the range of options available to them. Over the past decade bariatric care has evolved dramatically. There are more good options than ever before.

Navigating this ever-shifting landscape presents real challenges. Vital Bariatrics clinicians do not have any conflicts of interest or biases beyond what experience and science supports. Our mission is to help you learn about all your options, teach you about the pros and cons of various approaches, and help you make a winning plan. Consider this service if you fit these descriptors:

  • You are an Alberta resident

  • You are considering bariatric surgery or evidence based obesity care

  • You have had bariatric surgery and now have questions or concerns

  • You want to know what non-surgical options could work for you

  • You want to know what the risks of surgery would be for you

  • You want to know how to weigh the risks of surgery against the risks of a future without surgery

  • You want to predict your final result with various surgeries

  • You don't completely understand all the options available to you and need someone on your side that does

Vital Bariatrics Post-op Care.

The Care You Deserve

Good planning and good surgery are only the first parts of getting great outcomes from your bariatric surgery. The first year after surgery is full of rapid changes and potential pitfalls. Various nutritional parameters, hydration, weight, mental health, and co-morbidities are all moving targets in post-op patients. It is important to have experienced support to avoid complications and in this early phase.  A person should not have bariatric surgery unless they have robust, knowledgeable, and accessible support afterwards. The number of people showing up in Alberta emergency departments with avoidable problems has shown us that many people going abroad for surgery are not receiving adequate post-op care. Patients should consider engaging our services if they fit these descriptors:

  • You are an Alberta resident

  • You are considering having or have had bariatric surgery

  • You are not already under the active care of a Canadian bariatric program

We ask for a minimum of 6 months for new patients to ensure that we have enough time to connect with you and deliver the care you need.
